They were all tasked with creating a professional poster representing their dissertation research and could also choose to deliver their research in an oral presentation and even bake a cake which represented their research.
The group, who are studying a variety of animal and equine courses through the college group’s Warwickshire College and University Centre (WCUC), joined students from Derby College Group, SMB College Group, Askham Bryan College, Leeds City College, Merrist Wood College, South Staffordshire College, Bedford College Group, Coleg Sir Gar and Coleg Ceredigion.
Around 180 students took part, and the categories had a first, second and third prize, with winners selected by both the judging panel and the students themselves.
The judging panel featured industry experts from Chester Zoo, Waltham Petcare Science Institute, Wheelgate Farm and Castlefield Kennels.
Moreton Morrell College won prizes in five of the six categories, with Laura Garcia Torres and Caludia Agrusa placing first and second respectively in the judges’ poster category, Emma-Jayne Woolley achieving third place in the judges’ oral category, Thomas Horn placing third in the students’ oral category, and Emma-Jayne Woolley impressing with her cake and placing third in the judges’ category and first in the students’ category.
Emma-Jayne Woolley said: “Participating in the inter-college challenge was an incredible opportunity.
“It allowed me to showcase the hard work I put into my dissertation and learn about the exciting projects my peers are working on.
“I'm so glad I pushed myself out of my comfort zone, and I was truly honoured to receive several awards.”
Helen Coleman, subject lead for HE animal degree courses at WCUC, said: “It was a fantastic day which celebrated the achievements of our students and other like-minded peers from across the UK, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all of those who took part.
“All of our students embraced the opportunity to showcase their research, and they received some excellent feedback from the judges.
“The event was also a good opportunity for the students to network with other final-year students in a similar position.
“We are extremely proud of all of our students and I would like to congratulate all of those who took part.
“We would also like to thank Stacey Higgs from Derby College Group for organising the event and extend our thanks to her team for welcoming us to Broomfield Hall. We now look forward to the next event.”
