A first-year carpentry student has been named Student of Year at Moreton Morrell College and is hoping to follow in his uncle’s footsteps with a career in construction.

Alongside his studies, Liam improved his skills through extra-curriculum pursuits creating resin tables which were sold as part of a raffle at the college’s annual lambing weekend and building a beehive now situated in the college grounds.

Liam was also commended for his excellent coursework and will be returning to Moreton Morrell College to complete his Level 2 in Site Carpentry, with plans to go into the construction industry.

He said: “I felt happy when my name was called as the winner and my parents were really proud of me - my mum cried when she heard the news

“It is my first year at Moreton Morrell College and I originally started on an agriculture course before realising construction was better suited to my skills.

“At first, I felt a bit hesitant but my tutors have been so supportive in the development of my practical skills and as a result I have gone on to complete some great projects including building resin tables and a beehive, which I am particularly pleased with.

“My uncle has been a carpenter since I was a child and I have always enjoyed hearing about his projects.

“Members of my wider family also work in construction, and they have been really supportive of my studies, so I am excited to carry on their legacy in the industry.

“I am looking forward to returning next year and continuing to improve my abilities further studying on the Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry and hopefully get a construction job in the future.”

Anthony Rouse, Head of Department for Construction Skills at Moreton Morrell College said: “Liam has had a great first year here at Moreton Morrell College, going above and beyond in his studies including his extracurricular resin work, featured at the Lambing weekend and his beehive construction now based on the college site.

“In class this year, Liam has worked hard and consistently performs to a very high standard.

“We would like to congratulate Liam on his achievement and all of his hard work, and look forward to welcoming him back for the next academic year.”

A total of 36 awards were presented on the awards evening held at Moreton Morrell College.

Over 100 proud family members, guardians and staff celebrated with the students as they were recognised with awards for their hard work, determination, and progress throughout the academic year.

Students from an array of courses at Moreton Morrell College were honoured including those enrolled on agriculture, floristry, equine, farriery, land-based studies, countryside management, sport, animal welfare, veterinary nursing, construction, maths and supported learning.

Angela Joyce, CEO of WCG, addressed the ceremony before guests heard from Director of Moreton Morrell College, Louise Ball.

Louise said: “It has been brilliant welcoming friends, family, and staff to celebrate the successes of our students over this past academic year. Our students’ achievements span a range of industries and they should all be very proud.

“Congratulations to Liam on being named the College’s Student of Year, he is an excellent student and a great ambassador for both carpentry and the college, and we look forward to his future success.”
