College supports The Great Big Green Week

Stratford-upon-Avon College is celebrating all things green as we support The Great Big Green Week!

The Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. This year’s activities, taking place between 10th-18th June, will see thousands of people across the UK organising local festivals and activities with Stratford-upon-Avon itself hosting a variety of events.

The campaign aims to draw attention to climate change and destruction of the natural world, while also making a connection with these issues in communities and showcasing actions to tackle climate change.

The College is supporting a range of businesses that it has been working with as part of Collaborate to Train programme: a project co-funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) to boost the development of micro, small, and medium enterprises across Coventry & Warwickshire.

The businesses the College has been working with and that will take part in Great Big Green Week include Bobby’s Café and The Shakespeare Hospice, as well as Launch Agency providing a comms pack, Chin Badger Media providing media content and the College co-hosting an event at The Farm.

The College’s Sustainability Advisor, Ashlea Mallett, has been working with a variety of businesses in the build up to the events. She comments: “It's been very exciting bringing together so many amazing organisations, especially seeing the businesses we have signed up for sustainability consultancy supporting a local community drive for good. Really looking forwards to seeing all the hard work everyone has put in come together during Great Big Green Week. There are some pretty impressive and exciting things to look forward to!”

Janet Palmer, Co-Director of Net Zero Stratford, commented: “Great Big Green Week is a national celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. In Stratford, we know that people of all ages and backgrounds are needed, as we won’t make progress unless everyone works together. We are thrilled that Ashlea and the Stratford-upon-Avon College students are sharing their expertise and enthusiasm with us during Stratford Great Big Green Week and I'm sure that this will lead to positive networking across the generations!”

She continued: “This is Stratford’s third Great Big Green Week, and so far we have over 30 events planned between 10th and 18th June.  It is important to have a variety of activities so that everyone can find something of interest. We will have events with a focus on nature (bird walks, family bug hunting, talks from nature writers), local politics (action updates from Stratford and Warwick District Councils), cookery and nutrition (a demonstration of vegan cuisine to help us reduce meat consumption), the green economy (how can we tell if companies are genuinely reducing carbon emissions or just selling us “greenwash”?) and many more. The climate and nature crises are the most challenging global issues for us today and we need communities to learn, act and celebrate together if we are to make progress.”
