Positive business news a boost for the region

Olivia Parrish, the chair of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce’s Mid-Warwickshire Local Business Forum, says there is apprehension about the Autumn Budget but that there is plenty to be positive about regionally.

We’re a few weeks away from the new Chancellor’s first big fiscal event – the Autumn Budget – but there has certainly been a tone set by the Government that there might be a little bit of pain in store for everyone.

Positive business news a boost for the region

The new Government set quite a positive initial agenda around growth and, while that remains, we will all be watching on as Rachel Reeves delivers her budget to see how it is going to affect us.

There are also some changes to employee rights coming down the track and it will be vitally important to businesses of all sizes and sectors to stay on top of those but it’s equally important that the Government balances those changes with the needs of employers.

Regionally, I believe there is a great deal to be positive about and when you look at the Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Survey results we regularly out-perform the national averages.

Also, I am regularly reading about genuinely good business news of companies growing, firms taking on more people, new businesses being started and new arrivals into our area.

In recent days, I’ve seen that Wickes are taking a significant unit at Spa Park and that Lighthouse Games is taking an office in Leamington which plays into the narrative around Silicon Spa, which is a real feather in the cap for this area.

This is really exciting news and I think it’s up to us as business leaders to not only highlight the issues that we need addressing by decision-makers but also to highlight everything positive about where we live and work. There is definitely plenty to be optimistic about in this region.

Warwickshire has a huge amount going for it and – on top of the good news I’ve mentioned above – there is a great deal of support available to businesses that either need help to survive or want to pursue growth.

The Chamber of Commerce is a great starting point for those looking for help. Equally, it offers great events to help businesses grow.

For example, on October 11, it is the Chamber’s International Trade Summit at the Holiday Inn, Walsgrave, Coventry, which will provide an insight on how to either begin trading overseas or to expand the markets you operate in if you are already exporting.

I can’t recommend this kind of event enough because it will give practical advice and tips in an area that can really help a business go from strength to strength.

Similarly, the Chamber’s annual conference on November 8 is taking place at the IXL Events Centre in Southam and will once again be the biggest business event on the calendar with opportunities to hear from leaders and stakeholders as well as network with fellow businesspeople and decision-makers.

While we can’t control what the Chancellor might announce in her Budget, we can definitely make the most of the opportunities that come from being based in such a great place with such fantastic support available.
