Founded by Thomas Clarke in 1843, the company was taken over in 1888 by George Loveitt who changed its name to George Loveitt & Sons.
Over the decades Loveitts has played a prominent role in the history of Coventry and Warwickshire.
Landmark accomplishments include a huge eight-day auction at Coombe Abbey, the sale of Coventry Opera House Theatre which first opened in 1889 and the auction of the 1879 Queens Hotel in Hertford Street, Coventry, which had suffered extensive damage during the war.
Other major projects included the auction of one whole side of Hertford Street and the management of war-damaged properties worth almost £1 million, including more than half of the claims in the city’s Broadgate.
By the 1960s the company had expanded into Warwickshire – namely Kenilworth, Leamington and Bedworth – priding itself as Auctioneers, Valuers, Surveyors and Estate Agents.
Today the company remains the only Auctioneer in Coventry and is still the largest, independent multi-disciplinary practice in the area.
John Pugh, Managing Director, said: “Loveitts is one of the most established professional businesses in Coventry and Warwickshire and has been a key player in overseeing some of the largest deals within Coventry in the 1800s, 1900s, and now in the 21st Century. The service we have provided throughout the years have helped shape the city as we know it today, particularly as it sought to rebuild after the war.
“To reach the 180-year milestone is testament to the vision of the founders and the team effort of colleagues through the generations and not only are we proud to mark the accomplishments of the past but we look forward to ringing in the continued success of the business over the next 180 years.”
