Designed for newly diagnosed individuals as well as those who have lived with type 1 diabetes for many years, the course equips patients with the tools and knowledge needed to manage their condition effectively.
The funding provided by GEH Charity enables the course to supply Carb & Calorie Counter books – a key resource that helps patients understand portion sizes, carbohydrate values, and calorie content.
These books play a central role in supporting attendees to help them calculate their insulin dose to the food they are eating.
Theresa Ritchie, Diabetes Assistant Practitioner at George Eliot Hospital, said: "The Carb & Calorie Counter books funded by GEH Charity are fundamental to the course.
"They provide clear visuals and information, making it easier for patients to make informed decisions about food, activity, and overall diabetes management. Our goal is to help people live as normal a life as possible."
One recent participant, Lee Stevenson, shared how the course has transformed his outlook on managing his diabetes: "I used to have real problems with my Diabetes and would frequently end up in hospital.
"Since attending this course, I’ve learned a lot and I’m already seeing the benefits. It’s taught in simple, easy-to-understand language, and the booklets help with daily planning. It’s not just about food – it’s about activity and mindset too.
"Meeting others with the same condition has been a bonus; it reminds you that you’re not alone."
