New initiative for older workers

A new initiative to support citizens aged 50 plus in the region to remain in or re-enter the workforce is being delivered by the National Careers Service in the West Midlands.

New initiative for older workers

The 50+ Futures Project aims to promote and raise employer awareness of the benefits of recruitment, training and retention of those aged 50 and over, retaining the skills and experience of their older workers.

The National Careers Service 50+ Futures Project, delivered by Prospects in the West Midlands, is offering employed and unemployed individuals aged over 50 access to a range of services including careers guidance, mentoring support and development of a training needs/skills analysis.  The menu package will also include bespoke workshops including digital skills training, mid-life career review, work-life balance and managing health and well-being.

A free breakfast networking event for employers is being held on 30 April 2019 at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham where employers will share older workforce best practice. Providers championing and advising on this area will also be showcasing their offer to employers including free support for employers from the National Careers Service. A keynote address will be delivered by Aviva, focusing on managing an ageing workforce.

Kalpana Patel, Regional Director of the National Careers Service in the West Midlands said: “We welcome this opportunity to provide a free bespoke offer to employers to enable them to retain and retrain their older workforce.  Employers will certainly benefit from their skilled workforce remaining in work for longer.”

The National Careers Service provides high-quality, locally tailored information, advice and guidance to adults and supports them to achieve positive work or learning-related outcomes, particularly for those who are furthest from the labour market.  The 50+ Futures Project supports the government’s Fuller Working Lives initiative which encourages businesses to retain, retrain and recruit older workers and presents the benefits of a fuller working life.
