'Priceless’ royal memorabilia unearthed at free antiques event

TV antiques experts Christina Trevanion and Timothy Medhurst unearth ‘priceless’ royal memorabilia at free antiques event at Warwickshire retirement village. A fascinating collection of royal memorabilia was among the items discovered when BBC TV presenters, valuers and auctioneers Christina Trevanion and Timothy Medhurst visited Great Alne Park, a later living community in Warwickshire. The collection was unearthed at the retirement village, near Alcester, on Wednesday 13th March during Christina and Tim’s ‘Grand Antiques Tour’ of Inspired Villages’ later living communities around the UK.

Christina, known for her appearances on the BBC antiques programmes Bargain Hunt, Flog It!, Antiques Road Trip and Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, and Timothy, a regular on Antiques Road Trip, were at Great Alne Park to give free antiques valuations for residents and guests from the local area.

Christina said: “The royal memorabilia was the highlight of a fantastic day. The collection belonged to a former seamstress to the Queen and is absolutely priceless. It was shown to us by the seamstress’s sister, who shared the interesting tales behind the items.

“The woman’s sister applied for the seamstress job after reading an advert in The Lady magazine with her friend during her lunch hour. They were invited for interview at Buckingham Palace – and they both got the job. The story made headlines back at home.”

Christina adds: “Her collection also included a card signed by the then Princess Elizabeth to the seamstress when she was poorly in hospital. The future queen sent her a bouquet of flowers and a note. She kept the ribbon and the note, and also a pot of pills prescribed to the Queen from her doctor.

“It’s a fascinating, unique collection. It offers an insight into life in the royal family more than 70 years ago, through the experiences of a former member of staff.”

As well as the royal memorabilia, the residents and visitors brought along a variety of intriguing items, including; rare medals, paintings, prints, antique crockery – and even a truly unique antique polar bear!

The occasion was part of a series of events called ‘The Grand Antiques Tour’, organised by Inspired Villages, the company behind Great Alne Park. The tour is continuing across other Inspired retirement communities throughout March.

Christina said: “It’s always fascinating to discover the intriguing antiques, curious hand-me-downs and quirky finds that people have collected over the years. You never know what could be hidden in your own home.”

Over 100 people turned out to the event held in the recently launched Clubhouse, a luxurious space that features a restaurant, bar, spa, games room and cinema at the centre of the Great Alne Park later living community.

James Cobb, Director at Inspired Villages, said: “The royal memorabilia is a really exciting find – made even better by the stories behind the items.

“The valuation day was a brilliant event for everyone at Great Alne Park and the wider community. The atmosphere in the Clubhouse was electric and it was wonderful that we had such a big turnout on the day.

“It was also an opportunity to introduce people to Inspired Villages and what we offer today’s active, sociable retirees.”

Great Alne Park is home to 166 attractive later living cottages and apartments, set within 78 acres of stunning parkland with the Clubhouse at its centre.
