Coventry's Tale of Two Streets set for city-wide launch

A two-year photography commission to capture the people and places in two of Coventry’s most international streets is coming to its climax with exhibitions across the city.

Coventry's Tale of Two Streets set for city-wide launch

City-based Photo Archive Miners (PAM) was commissioned to produce Tale of Two Streets and has worked with ten Coventry University graduate photographers along with internationally renowned Niall McDiarmid to shoot images on Far Gosford Street and Foleshill Road.

Hundreds of people – as well as various landscapes and locations – have been photographed and now over a hundred images are being exhibited around Coventry.

The exhibition launches on Wednesday, May 1 and will run until June 2. All photographers’ work is being showcased in the city centre outdoor exhibition on Greyfriars Green, while individual work will be on shown at The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Edgwick Park, Fargo Village, Bodyworx Gym, Gurdwara Guru Nanak Parksash, St Pauls Church and Coventry Canal Basin.

Tale of Two Streets has been supported by the Coventry City of Culture Trust, Heritage Lottery Fund & Arts Council England, Coventry University, The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, MotoFest and Coventry City Council.

Jason Scott Tilley, of PAM, said Tale of Two Streets had a dual purpose.

He said: “We got the project off the ground during the bidding phase for UK City of Culture as a way of capturing the diversity of two very well-known Coventry streets.

“I got in touch with Niall because I thought it was the perfect commission for him. He is an incredible photographer who is respected nationally and internationally and I know he has really enjoyed it and loves Coventry and the people here.”

“Part of the thought process was to also tap into some of the very talented photographers we have in the city and to engage them with the kind of project that will grow as we move towards 2021.

“It’s vitally important that we nurture local talent and give it an opportunity to shine so that we keep our best artists and creatives here in Coventry as we build towards 2021 and beyond that.

“We are thrilled with the final results and we would encourage people across the city to make the most of this chance to see the exhibition.”

Jacqui Ibbotson, of the Coventry City of Culture Trust, said: “Tale of Two Streets is two years in the making and we are all looking forward to see the final exhibition displayed across the city.

“It’s great that there will be opportunities in the city centre, in Far Gosford Street and in Foleshill Road to see the photographers’ wonderful work.”
