A terminal illness diagnosis not only affects the person with the diagnosis, but their family, close friends and work colleagues. Those affected will have different responses; some people are unable to continue working or want to leave employment in order to spend their remaining time with family and friends, others hope to work as long as possible, for financial security, for routine or a sense of well-being, or as a distraction. There are also potential financial implications in terms of securing death in service benefits for loved ones.
Employees caring for the terminally ill may also be under increased strain due to juggling caring and employment responsibilities. In addition, most progressive illnesses will be considered a disability, which is a protected characteristic covered by discrimination law.
Join ACAS and leading experts as we consider terminal illness and its impact in the workplace, including the legal obligations, the moral and business case, and good practice for managing and supporting affected staff.
