By following up, with a contact from an awards or even a networking event, you solidify your relationship with that person.
Here are TP Creative's top tips for following-up with a contact.
Follow up within 24 hours
Ensure you reach out quickly so the acquaintance remembers you. Send an email, LinkedIn message, or letter within 24 hours of meeting them.
Reference your conversation
Mention a topic you discussed at the event to jog their memory. For example, "I enjoyed speaking with you after the keynote speech at the XYZ event."
Offer to help
Always offer assistance before asking for a favour. If you discussed a way to help them, follow through. For instance, if you offered to connect them with someone or share an article, make sure to do so.
Suggest a meet-up
If you’re in the same area, propose meeting for coffee. If not, suggest a video chat or phone call to continue your conversation. For example, "I would love to continue our discussion on best practices in cloud computing. Could we meet next week to discuss further over coffee?"
Connect on LinkedIn
Strengthen your professional relationship by connecting on LinkedIn. Focus on building your connection before requesting any favours, such as recommendations.
Edit thoroughly
Whether you’re sending a letter or an email, make sure to edit your message thoroughly. This is a professional communication, so ensure there are no spelling or grammar errors to leave a strong, positive impression.
