Top Tips For Supporting Young Adult Carers In an apprenticeship and beyond

Organised, proactive, reliable, diligent, able to communicate confidently with a range of people, loyal.

Are these all qualities you value in your workforce? Young Adult Carers (anyone aged 16-25 providing care for a relative) are a valuable asset to any workplace because of the range of transferrable skills and qualities they develop in their caring role. However, they may need some additional considerations to ensure they can balance work and their caring responsibilities to ensure success for themselves and for your organisation.

Here are our Top Tips for things that employers can do to support apprentices who are Young Adult Carers.

1.

The minimum hours for a full-time apprenticeship are 30 per week. Do you need your apprentice to work 37 or 40 hours, or could you consider a 30-hour contract that would get the best from your apprentice whilst giving them the valuable extra few hours each week to manage their caring responsibilities and take time for themselves?

2.

Could you consider a part-time apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship rules allow you to extend the apprenticeship beyond 12 months to accommodate part-time working. For example, if your apprentice will work 20 hours per week the length of their apprenticeship will extend to 18 months. (12x30/20 =18)  Click here for further guidance

4.

Consider having a mentor in place or a key staff member that carers can raise any issues or concerns with and who can signpost them to relevant policies and procedures to support them.

5.

If you are a large employer, consider facilitating a Staff Carers Forum.  You may not be aware of how many of your employees are providing care and support to someone at home.

6.

Display information in staff areas about local carers services.

7.

Discuss with your apprentice any specific needs they may have such as access to a telephone in case of an emergency.
